MestreTabosa

Hélio Tabosa de Moraes, known as Mestre Tabosa, is one of the foundational figures of capoeira in Brazil's Federal District. Born on February 5, 1947, he began his professional life as a banker but abandoned that career to become an autonomous educator, following what he called his profession of talent and heart—education.

Before dedicating himself to capoeira, Tabosa studied multiple martial arts including judo (achieving 1st Dan black belt in 1981), sumo, fencing, and karate. In 1964, he began training capoeira in Brasília, a pivotal moment that would define his life's work. His primary teacher was Mestre Arraia (Aldenor Benjamim), who had trained in Salvador with exposure to both Mestre Bimba and Mestre Pastinha. According to his IPHAN registry, he also trained under Mestre Onça Tigre (Milton Freire de Carvalho), the legendary student of Bimba who had established the first capoeira school in the Federal District that same year.

At the Colégio Elefante Branco, Tabosa trained alongside Cláudio Danadinho (later one of Grupo Senzala's founding mestres) and Alfredo "Fritz"—friends who would become crucial to capoeira history. In 1965, he introduced capoeira to the University of Brasília (UnB), becoming the first to bring the art to that institution. Mestre Zulu recalls training capoeira with Mestre Tabosa at UnB during the first semester of 1970.
