Bruno de Otero Hermanny was born on December 26, 1932, in São Paulo. At the age of six, he moved with his family to Rio de Janeiro, where he would develop into one of Brazil's most versatile athletes and, to this day, remains the only Brazilian two-time individual world champion in underwater fishing (spearfishing).
Bruno was one of the children of Arthur Hermanny and Elisabeth de Otero. His siblings included Rudolf de Otero Hermanny, who would become famous as a capoeira fighter under Mestre Sinhozinho; Thereza de Otero Hermanny (1930-2015), who married the legendary composer Tom Jobim in 1949; and Corina Hermanny Freire.
During the mid-1940s, Bruno trained at Mestre Sinhozinho's academies in Ipanema alongside his brother Rudolf. Sinhozinho's club in Ipanema was a training ground for the wealthy youth of the neighborhood, offering weight lifting, apparatus gymnastics, boxing, capoeira, and other physical disciplines. While Rudolf would go on to represent Sinhozinho in famous challenge fights against Mestre Bimba's students (1949) and the Gracie family (1953), Bruno channeled his athleticism into aquatic sports.
Bruno's first contact with swimming came at the Clube Germânia (now Esporte Clube Pinheiros) in São Paulo. After moving to Rio, he was taken to Fluminense Futebol Clube for a swimming test and remained there for several years training and competing in speed events. He was part of teams that won State, National, and South American championships (1954), swimming alongside João Gonçalves, Aran Boghossian, and Tetsujo Okamoto.
When he turned 18, Bruno enlisted in military service. While serving in the army, he was called up for two World Championships in Modern Pentathlon, where he distinguished himself in the swimming and equestrian events.
However, it was in underwater fishing that Bruno achieved his greatest success. In 1952, he organized the first Brazilian spearfishing championship in Angra dos Reis. He won State and National championships, and in 1960 claimed his first World Championship title in Italy. In 1963, he won his second World Championship in Rio de Janeiro, making him the only Brazilian to win the individual world title twice in the sport.
Bruno's 1960 world championship earned him a cover on the January 14, 1961 edition of O Cruzeiro magazine, alongside Pelé (football), Éder Jofre (boxing), and Maria Esther Bueno (tennis) - a feature projecting the careers of Brazil's four greatest athletes of the moment. In 1953, he was instrumental in the founding of the Confederação Brasileira de Caça Submarina (Brazilian Underwater Fishing Confederation).
Bruno de Otero Hermanny died on February 20, 1992, in Rio de Janeiro. In his honor, the Iate Clube do Rio de Janeiro hosts an annual tournament bearing his name, the Torneio Bruno Hermanny, celebrating the greatest Brazilian ever to compete in the sport.
