Antônio Rodrigues was a pioneer of capoeira in Itabuna, Bahia, who bridged the gap between street practice and formal instruction. He was the first master to open a capoeira academy in an enclosed space in the city, founding the Academia de Capoeira Nossa Senhora de Fátima.
Before the formalization of capoeira in Itabuna, practice occurred in street rodas with marginalized practitioners known as "angoleiros" who trained without fixed locations. Antônio Rodrigues came from this tradition but took the bold step of establishing a permanent teaching space, making capoeira more accessible to young people in the community.
His academy became a training ground for several notable capoeiristas who would later influence capoeira across Brazil and internationally. In 1964, a young Miguel Machado (later Mestre Miguel Preto) began his capoeira journey under Antônio Rodrigues at age sixteen, becoming one of his instructors by 1965. Around the same period, Everaldo Bispo de Souza (Mestre Lobão, born 1952) trained under both Antônio Rodrigues and Luiz Medicina in the 1960s. Mestre Régis, born in 1957, began training with Antônio Rodrigues at just eight years old, encouraged by his older brother Ireneildo Gonçalves de Souza.
Antônio Rodrigues also introduced the young Luís Oliveira Rocha (later Mestre Medicina) to the capoeira circles of Itabuna around 1965, when Medicina was approximately fifteen years old. This connection would prove significant, as Medicina became one of Mestre Suassuna's most accomplished students and later founded multiple capoeira groups including Grupo Raça.
The notable capoeirista Amir das Areias, who would later inspire the founding of the CLARATE capoeira group, gave courses at the Academia de Capoeira Nossa Senhora de Fátima.
After Antônio Rodrigues, the academy passed to Mestre Gabriel, who renamed it "Academia de Capoeira e Cultura Física de Itabuna." The lineage continued when Mestre Alfredo took over, renaming it "Capoeira Zumbí dos Palmares." In 1979, at the inauguration of the Centro Social Urbano (CSU) in Itabuna, Mestre Gabriel established capoeira activities there, where Mestre China would train for 43 years.
Antônio Rodrigues's significance lies in his role as a transitional figure—he emerged from the marginalized street capoeira tradition yet helped bring the art into more formal, socially accepted spaces. His academy operated parallel to, but distinctly from, Major Dória's elite establishment (founded 1958) where the white instructor Maneca Brandão—son of a former mayor and student of Mestre Bimba—taught to a higher social class.
