Gilson Capoeira was a capoeira practitioner from the Periperí neighborhood in Salvador, Bahia, active in the late 1950s. Little is known about his life, but his role in capoeira history was to introduce the young Waldenkolk Oliveira to the art.
In 1959, a homeless 12-year-old boy named Waldenkolk Oliveira—who had lost his mother at age seven and been living on the streets of Salvador—encountered Gilson Capoeira while wandering through the poor neighborhoods of Calçadas and Ribeira. Gilson taught the boy his first capoeira moves and, recognizing his potential, brought him to Mestre Bimba's academy.
This introduction proved transformative. At Bimba's academy, the shy boy who hid behind benches and was always last to enter the roda received the nickname "Preguiça" (sloth) for his cautious hesitancy. That boy would become Mestre Preguiça, co-founder of Grupo Senzala, two-time Berimbau de Ouro champion (1967-1968), and one of the most influential figures in Brazilian capoeira's modern expansion.
Though Gilson Capoeira remains largely unknown beyond this single documented act of mentorship, his intervention changed the life of a street child and, through Preguiça's subsequent career, influenced the development of capoeira worldwide.
