Mestre Galo was a pioneering figure in the capoeira scene of Jundiaí, São Paulo, credited with founding the city's first capoeira academy—Academia de Capoeira Rio Vermelho. He is remembered by his student Mestre Rã (Cássio Martinho) as "um cara das ruas"—a guy from the streets—whose approach to capoeira was practical and rooted in lived experience rather than formal academic training.
Galo established himself in Jundiaí during the early 1970s, at a time when capoeira was still spreading from Salvador and São Paulo to the smaller cities of Brazil's interior. His Academia Rio Vermelho became the first structured space for capoeira instruction in the city, making him one of the icons of the sport in Jundiaí.
In 1974, Mestre Tarzan arrived in the Campinas region, sent by Mestre Suassuna to help expand capoeira beyond the capital. Tarzan and Galo taught alongside each other in Jundiaí, together introducing the art to a new generation of practitioners. The collaboration created a dual-lineage environment where students could benefit from both teachers' approaches.
One of Galo's most significant students was Cássio Martinho, who began training at around age 14 (circa 1973). At his batizado ceremony held at the Grêmio (a local club in Jundiaí), Galo gave the young capoeirista his apelido "Rã" (frog)—a nickname that would become famous as Mestre Rã went on to co-found the United Capoeira Association with Mestre Acordeon and bring capoeira to California.
As Mestre Rã later recalled: "Ele era um cara das ruas, como eu. Me ensinou várias coisas" (He was a street guy, like me. He taught me several things). This shared street sensibility created a bond between teacher and student that transcended formal instruction.
Galo reportedly "made history in Jundiaí by climbing up the walls"—a reference to his impressive physical demonstrations that showcased the athletic potential of capoeira practice. Another student, Mauro (Mestre Bilisquinho), trained under Galo at Academia Rio Vermelho in 1978 after initially encountering capoeira at Robert Bosch Ltda in Campinas with Mestre Rubinho. Galo trained Bilisquinho until he achieved the title of Mestre, before Bilisquinho eventually moved to Germany where he founded Capoeira Erfurt.
In the early 1980s, both Mestre Tarzan and Mestre Galo left Jundiaí. The circumstances and destination of Galo's departure remain undocumented. Their departure prompted Mestre Rã to found his own group—Capoeira Idalina—as a tribute to his grandmother and to continue the capoeira tradition they had established in the city.
No sources document Galo's full name, origins, or who taught him capoeira. His whereabouts after leaving Jundiaí are unknown.
