Antônio Cabeceiro was a student of Mestre Pastinha who brought Capoeira Angola to the southern Bahian city of Ilhéus. In an era before formal capoeira academies existed outside Salvador, Cabeceiro taught the art on the streets—transmitting knowledge the same way it had been passed down for generations, through observation in the roda and direct practice.
Before his time in Ilhéus, Cabeceiro trained at Mestre Waldemar's legendary roda in Salvador—the barracão in Liberdade that attracted "every capoeirista from Bahia". The roda was notorious for its intensity, filled with what João Grande called "snakes, experts" who showed no mercy to newcomers.
In 1953 or 1954, a young João Grande—only three months into his capoeira training—experienced Cabeceiro's formidable skill firsthand. While playing with Evanir, Cabeceiro bought the game without João Grande seeing. "Exactly at the time when I did a meia lua de costas without looking", João Grande recalled, "he threw me out of the roda, into the middle of the street. I didn't even see it coming. I got all dirty and had to leave". Years later, João Grande still remembered: "Antônio Cabeceiro was as wicked as anything".
In 1956, Cabeceiro appeared at the Festa de São Sebastião in Ilhéus—the celebration of the city's patron saint. Alongside Mestres João Grande and João Pequeno, he demonstrated capoeira to crowds that included an eleven-year-old boy named Vivaldo Conceição Rodrigues. That boy, watching the mestres play, felt something awaken in him. He would become Mestre Boa Gente.
There were no capoeira schools in Ilhéus in 1956. Boa Gente learned in the traditional manner—watching others in the roda and applying what he saw. His first teacher was Antônio Cabeceiro, who taught him on the streets of Ilhéus. Through Cabeceiro, the lineage of Mestre Pastinha extended beyond Salvador into southern Bahia, planting seeds that would grow into the next generation of capoeiristas.
